Kicking off Food Network's NYC Food Festival

On Thursday, 10/7 I got an email around 6pm inviting me to the Thrillist Bacon & Blues Festival.  This was the first night of the annual Food Network Food & Wine Festival.  Normally I would not accept a last minute invite on a Thursday night… but BACON?! Of course I had to go.  Bacon has always provided a level of comfort to me.  When I was younger (and I mean about 17-18 yrs old) my mom would use the smell of bacon and that musical sizzling frying sound to lure me out of bed on Sunday morning after a night of partying.  Since then I have had a special bond with this salty, crispy, fatty wondrous meat..  I mean honestly what food does bacon not make better?

At the event, hosted by the Andaz hotel, there seemed to be an over representation of BBQ chefs from around the area.  I don’t usually associate bacon with BBQ but I do love both so it wasn’t so much a problem as it was just surprising.  The evening’s host was Todd English. Some of the dishes listed below:

Bacon brittle

Bacon weaved basket with pulled pork from Mables

Bacon Butter Bourbon Popcorn with Brown Sugar

Crispy Pork Rillette Slider & Sliced Pork – CaVa

Cava also had sliced meat

Spiced Pork Belly with Lime & Coriander – Andaz 5th Avenue

My favorite bacon snack of the night

My favorite was from the upcoming Mables, a bacon basket filled with pulled pork? Yep! This new Brooklyn post was also handing out mini bottles of BBQ sauce. The runner up of the night was a very simple dish from Andaz that was crispy little squares of pork belly bacon.
